October 20, 2012

This week's harvest:
Sweet Potatoes
Butternut Squash
Garlic
Lettuce
"Hakurei" Salad Turnips (and their delicious greens!)
Baby Ginger!
Greens Choice: Kale, Mizuna, Collards, Red Mustard

This week's farm news:

The week was a busy one! With a little help from (our new neighbors!) Jesse and Hannah, we finally finished digging the sweet potatoes! Hooray! Now they are tucked away in our greenhouse for curing and storage. We also planted next year's garlic crop. Double hooray! We still have to mulch it but otherwise, two major projects were checked off our "to-do" list this week! We also dug our first ever crop of ginger. We didn't grow a whole lot for our trial year, but it's enough to give y'all a taste! And it was successful enough that we intend to grow more in the future. And, boy, is it yummy! Our growing season isn't long enough for ginger to obtain that characteristic tan-brown colored skin. Here, we harvest it in the "baby" stage...while it is amazingly tender, juicy, and not at all fiberous. Enjoy this special treat! Also, enjoy this gorgeous autumn weather and beautiful fall foliage! What a special time of year.
