No delivery this Saturday

Cancel that last post. According to an email from Hannah:
There will be no vegetable delivery this Saturday, December 20th. A lot of folks are going out of town, so the number of baskets does not make the delivery economically feasible. Our apologies to those of you who signed up. Please look for an email soon regarding the next delivery date.

And of course, I'll post that information here, too. Happy Holidays, fans of Bugtussle Farm!

Another delivery

I believe Cher and Eric are planning to make another winter share delivery this Saturday, the 20th, unless the weather gets in the way or there are too few of us to make it worthwhile or a combination of the two. I'll post an update at the end of the week to let you know the final verdict.

Winter Basket #2 News

This week's news from our farmers:

We sure didn't see the sun much this week! It was dark & dismal & rainy most of the week. We had a dusting of snow on Friday morning. (Slightly challenging for greens harvest!) As we approach the winter solstice, the days are such quick blinks of time that it seems we scarcely finish morning chores when it's time to do evening chores. In between chores, cooking meals, and keeping the wood stove stoked, we don't feel like we're making much headway on our winter "to-do" list! But that's the beauty of this time of year: the short days leave us with long nights to catch up on resting, reading, and planning. We've decided to add a guard dog to our crew of critters. Several months ago our family dog, Juniper, was retired from her job of protecting the chickens. (We noticed her health was rapidly declining.) Sadly, she died a couple of weeks ago at 10 1/2 years old. She was a great friend & big helper, too! This new puppy, who has big shoes (paws?) to fill, is an Anatolian Shepherd/Pyrenees/Akbash mix. She'll probably join our crew after Christmas. We are looking forward to it!

The veggies we received:
Spinach
Kale
Parsley
Sweet Potatoes
Red Potatoes
Butternut Squash
Garlic
Onions
Beets
Leeks
Daikon Radish

Yum!

We have confirmation

Just in case anyone was having any last-minute concerns about tomorrow morning's pickup, Cher called this evening to let me know they'll be in Nashville with our goodies tomorrow morning from 10-noon. Hooray! See you there!

Winter Basket #1 News

This week's news from our farmers:

Greetings friends! We hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving. Boy-O-Boy has it been chilly! The cold snap in late November caught us slightly off guard. We saw 15 degrees on our front porch so it was probably colder out in the open fields. Yikes! That's cold for November. Despite our efforts to have crops under protection in the garden, we still experienced quite a bit of damage. Of our fall/winter crops, celery in particular does not like to get that cold. Cold makes it stringy. You're getting some in your baskets today anyhow so we recommend using it to add delicious flavor to broths instead of for fresh eating. Our squash that was stored up in the loft of the barn was probably the hardest hit by the cold. We thought that the warmth of the wood stove in the intern room just below the squash would provide the necessary warmth to prevent freezing, but numerous squash were still "kissed" by the freeze. They're still good to eat but won't store nearly as long. Then, for this week's harvest, all of the greens were like popcicles! We haven't experienced this challenge before! We are learning a bunch in our efforts to have a winter share. Thank you for supporting us on this new learning adventure!

The vegetables we received were:

Brussels sprouts
Spinach
Kale
Celery
Sweet potatoes
Butternut squash
Onions
Garlic
Red potatoes

Feel free to share good recipes here!
