Winter Basket #1 News

This week's news from our farmers:

Greetings friends! We hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving. Boy-O-Boy has it been chilly! The cold snap in late November caught us slightly off guard. We saw 15 degrees on our front porch so it was probably colder out in the open fields. Yikes! That's cold for November. Despite our efforts to have crops under protection in the garden, we still experienced quite a bit of damage. Of our fall/winter crops, celery in particular does not like to get that cold. Cold makes it stringy. You're getting some in your baskets today anyhow so we recommend using it to add delicious flavor to broths instead of for fresh eating. Our squash that was stored up in the loft of the barn was probably the hardest hit by the cold. We thought that the warmth of the wood stove in the intern room just below the squash would provide the necessary warmth to prevent freezing, but numerous squash were still "kissed" by the freeze. They're still good to eat but won't store nearly as long. Then, for this week's harvest, all of the greens were like popcicles! We haven't experienced this challenge before! We are learning a bunch in our efforts to have a winter share. Thank you for supporting us on this new learning adventure!

The vegetables we received were:

Brussels sprouts
Spinach
Kale
Celery
Sweet potatoes
Butternut squash
Onions
Garlic
Red potatoes

Feel free to share good recipes here!

Liz, Don had a great idea - the blog needs photos of the bounty! I would love to do the photos if you are interested.

Thanks for this blog Cher, Eric and Liz (and other, if I've missed anyone!). Even though Tom and I can't participate in getting veggies this year, we miss y'all and are glad to have this way to stay connected.
